According to a 2007 newspaper article the CBC, the Ottawa apartment tenants throw a staggering 81 percent of all materials that could be recycled!

While routine behind garbage and recycling can certainly be different when you live in an apartment (as opposed to living in a relative's home), just because you are in a skyscraper does not mean you are above recycling.

What can be recycled

Although the containers may be different sizes and different colors than the houses, the same types of materials can be recycled even if you live in an apartment building:

· Plastic containers with a recycling triangle on the bottom, including all bottles, buckets, bathtubs and jugs

· Aluminum beverage cans

· Tin cans

• The milk and juice cartons

Juice boxes ·

· Jars and bottles (clear and colored)

Newspapers · and inserts, brochures and junk mail

· Magazines, phone books, household paper, shredded paper and envelopes

· Cardboard egg cartons and paper tubes

· Flattened cardboard (eg cereal, crackers, tissues, clothing, shoes and packing boxes)

All buildings must have recycling bins on site (and some rooms have dedicated recycling on each floor, for maximum occupant comfort). If you are unsure of where the recycling bins in your building, check with your building manager.

For proper disposal of special waste such as paint, construction materials, appliances, tires and old furniture or mattresses, talk to building manager or superintendent of his building - not just mechanically throwing!

Avoid contaminating recycling bin of

With so many things that can be recycled, why it is what is thrown away? An important factor in the amount of materials recyclables that are thrown in the trash is the pollution of apartment recycling containers - and it's a problem that can prevent tenants of apartments with only a little effort.

When materials are placed in the wrong recycling bin, you can not recycle! The tray is dropped or the contents must be collected as garbage, it is too costly and time consuming to classify. To avoid this:

· Not put your recyclables in plastic bags. These bags can not be recycled, and as a result, anything placed inside plastic bags can be recycled. Also, do not bind your materials together, like processing facilities can not be removed or wire rope.

· Remember, glass, metal and plastic into a bin. Paper and cardboard go to the other. Do not put your material recycling bin in first thing you see, not to throw any type of trash to the recycle bin!

· Not everything is recyclable. Items such as hard plastics (cups and plates), the Styrofoam containers, motor oil bottles, spray cans, chip bags and candy wrappers, etc. should not put in recycling bins.

Get Attention to recycling

If for any reason, you need a greater incentive to recycle to help the environment, how is this - recycling can save money, too! Instead of placing them in containers his apartment building, you can always return to your empty wine, beer and spirit containers to store beer for the return of full deposit. This includes glass bottles, bag-in-box, Tetra Pak cartons, plastic bottles and aluminum and steel containers on which deposits have been charged.

It is clear that, as tenants in apartments, we must work hard to make sure you recycle everything we can. To this end, the City of Ottawa has made a Guide Recycling and disposal available to all of Ottawa residents living in apartment buildings.
