Most of us are very diligent about recycling every week. For some of us, the kitchen scraps go to compost, glass, plastic and cans are separated. That's fine for cooking, but what about the rest of the house? What most do not realize is the home office provides a wide opportunity for eco-friendly living, but largely ignored.
Many do not think twice of using high quality non-recycled paper, or throwing cartridges ink and old electronics in the trash. Leaving a computer on overnight seems innocent enough until you multiply the energy use per million households.
The three offenders are home office energy wastage, paper consumption and hazardous waste. Here are some tips to make your home office to a system little easier.
Put your electronics to bed at night. Connect your computer, speakers, fax, printer, etc. to a power bar and turn on all film of a switch at the end of the day. It's a common misconception that you must leave a computer on all night. There is a peak in the power when you turn it on, but nothing compared to what you use for a period of 24 hours.
Choosing a laptop. Not only have the advantage of being portable, laptops consume eighth power of a desktop computer. Imagine if everyone in a house all had their own teams, which have not yet used the power of a desktop computer.
Go to the flat screen. An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or flat screen monitor uses less than half the energy of traditional CRT (tube-ray cathode) monitors. Not to mention that they are easier to read, lighter and causes less eyestrain.
Reuse and recycling. I had a friend it uses to store your junk mail that was in good condition and when they do simple print jobs, would use the blank side of those pages. It was such a concept simple that made sense and worked hard for those quick map or print outs of the recipe.
And re save clips, rubber bands and pins of thrust, and the use of rechargeable batteries and refillable ink cartridges.
For your paper trash, wearing a recycling container next to his desk for practical use. Keep container close to other rechargeable batteries expired, inkjet and toner cartridges age, or electronics. Once you have created a collection, that lead to any Staples Business Depot for recycling.
Batteries should be stored or placed in your local store waste for safe disposal. Than containing corrosive acid will seep into the environment if left in a landfill.
When buying paper, read the labels. What many do not realize is that much of the paper we use everyday comes from old forests. When reading labels on packages, look for: 100% recycled (its 1st choice), or certification FFC minimum, which means that the paper was made from trees growing in a forest in a sustainable manner.
Switch to fluorescent bulbs. A fluorescent bulb uses 2 / 3 less energy than an incandescent bulb. When you add up all the bulbs in the house, which translates into energy savings dollars saved!
